One dead, scores burnt as militants, vigilantes clash in Imo

A bloody clash between alleged repented militants from the oil producing Ohaji /Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of Imo state and operatives of Imo security watch, left the state capital, Owerri, in turmoil on Thursday as scores were badly wounded.

The militants and the security men reportedly engaged in a heated argument which intensified and led to a gun duel

one of the security men was shot dead, another badly injured, four vehicles set on fire with three others vandalized in the process.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident, saying there was pandemonium yesterday in Owerri following a bloody  clash between between repented militants from the oil producing Ohaji /Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of the state and operatives of Imo security.

Enwerem said, according to information report, the ex-militants were believed to be on their way to Owerri to surrender their arms in obedience to the state government amnesty programme for militants in the state

''They clashed with the operatives of Imo security watch, an internal security outfit, in the state.The militants, unsatisfied with the damages caused, regrouped to the security operatives' office located on Aba road in Owerri.

''One person has been confirmed dead, others were burnt, four vehicles were set on fire with another three vandalized in the process,'' the PPRO said, adding that the lifeless body of the victim had been deposited at the Umuguma General Hospital.
